The club has been shortlisted for the 2025 British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS) Sustainable Sport Awards in the Nature category for its work in promoting nature.
Having already been nominated for a BBC Green Sports Awards, Fran Kirby was also shortlisted for the nature category for her work with WWF promoting the benefits of nature to mental and physical wellbeing. If you missed it, Fran’s interview with can be found here. For the past few years, the club have been promoting nature on their own sites, in the city and around the world.
The nomination highlighted the work of the club on its own sites including the planting of trees, hedges and plants, the living green walls on the club’s new fan zone, The Terrace, and a green roof installed on a recently constructed building.
The club is also looking to the future to see how small changes can make a big difference. This year the club trialled a wildflower meadow on a small area of the grass banks at the stadium with plans to expand this approach in the future. Eight species of wildflower were spotted including two species of orchid, as well as a wide range of insects.
The club’s action to promote nature didn’t just stop at its own sites. As part of the celebrations around the Women’s Rugby World Cup matches the stadium hosted in September, the club worked with the tournament organisers, the countryside charity CPRE and Brighton and Hove City Council to plant 16 trees across the city – one for each team competing in the competition. And it’s not just the club who have been championing nature. For the past two seasons, MyAlbion+ members have been making a difference by choosing to fund tree planting in the Andes, Ecuador instead of receiving their annual membership pack. In total over 33,000 trees were planted in the Andes across eight hectares of previously deforested land, equivalent to around ten football pitches. The BASIS awards are being held on 25 November at The All England Lawn Tennis Club with the aim of shining a spotlight on the people, projects and partnerships leading the charge for climate action, innovation and sustainability across the sector.
