For the past two seasons, MyAlbion+ members have been making a difference by choosing to fund tree planting in the Andes, Ecuador instead of receiving their annual membership pack.
In total over 33,000 trees were planted in the Andes across eight hectares of previously deforested land, equivalent to around ten football pitches.
The trees were expertly selected to ensure tree species native to the area were planted with Polylepis being the most prominent tree species on the site. The primary aim of the project was to restore habitats for many endangered local bird species (such as the Black-breasted Puffleg, Andean Condor, Aplomado Falcon and several species of hummingbird). As well as numerous bird species, the forest will also provide a habitat for a local fox species, Lobo Andino.
The significance of this initiative cannot be overstated, especially considering Ecuador's deforestation in recent years. By focusing on replanting in protected areas it has made a meaningful contribution to the restoration and preservation of these crucial ecosystems.
Not only does the tree planting benefit plants and animals, but the project also sets out to empower local communities to protect nature and generate training and livelihoods for locals. The tree nurseries used for the seed to sapling growth are predominantly led by women who receive training to deliver workshops at the tree nurseries.
Another benefit of the project is that the trees that have been planted will help to preserve water sources for the communities, as the root systems of trees regulate the flow of fresh water into streams, which benefits local agriculture.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the MyAlbion+ members who chose to make this simple switch and show the combined impact fans can have.
Jenny Gower, Albion's head of ticketing and supporter services, said, "We have been delighted to work alongside Treeapp on this environmental sustainability initiative for our MyAlbion+ Members.
"We had a fantastic uptake from supporters who opted out of receiving a membership gift pack and instead plant trees.
"Collectively, over a two-year period, MyAlbion+ members supported the planting of over 33,000 trees in Ecuador. We are proud of this achievement and thank every one of our supporters who made a donation.”
Although the club won’t be running this initiative for the 2025/26 season, MyAlbion+ members can still make a difference by using their reward points to donate to our partner UNICEF or choose to support the work of the Brighton and Hove Albion Foundation.
