Men’s under-21 midfielder Josh Robertson has successfully kickstarted his Albion career after injury had halted his progress.
The 19-year-old arrived from Sunderland in February 2024 but sustained a hamstring injury the following month that kept him sidelined for almost a year.
A further non-related hamstring issue hampered his return to action, with his first 90 minutes of football only coming last month in the National League Cup win at Sutton United.
He completed another 90 minutes in the Seagulls’ 3-3 draw at West Ham United last Friday, while his successful comeback continued last night with a stunning 20-yard strike in the Vertu Trophy draw at Barnet.
“The lads told me to shoot, so I went for it!” smiled the midfielder, whose composure on the ball and creativity stood out on the night. “I’ve done that before in training and as soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in. It was a really nice feeling and now I just want to kick on after what has been a difficult time with my injuries.”
Robertson, or ‘Robbo’ as he’s known to his teammates, admits it’s been a tough start to life as a Seagull but he is now looking forward to what he hopes will be a successful career on the south coast.
“When you join a new club it takes time to settle in, then to get injured pretty much straight away, it was difficult. You’ve got to go through the rehab and it’s been pretty hard journey getting back into the team.
“I found it difficult to get myself up to speed again, to pick up where I was, but I feel like I’m in that position now. I feel like I’m getting back into my rhythm again.”
Robertson’s longer-term target is to break into the senior squad, which would mean linking up once again on the pitch with Tommy Watson, a player he knows well from his time on Wearside.

“We used to play together at Sunderland in the under-18s before he moved up to the 21s and first team, and he’s a really good lad – it’s nice to have him around,” he added.
“I’ve been able to show him around and it’s been nice to see a familiar face, but to be honest, I’ve settled really well down here. It takes a bit of adjustment not seeing your family as much, but the lads have been really good, along with all the staff, so I’ve enjoyed it so far.
“Of course it’s been a difficult time on the pitch but hopefully that’s all behind me now. It would be great to break into the first-team squad at some point, but at the moment I’m just focused on playing 90 minutes consistently to get my fitness back up to where it needs to be, keep performing and then see where it takes me."
