Menâs under-21 midfielder Josh Robertson has successfully kickstarted his Albion career after injury had halted his progress.
The 19-year-old arrived from Sunderland in February 2024 but sustained a hamstring injury the following month that kept him sidelined for almost a year.
A further non-related hamstring issue hampered his return to action, with his first 90 minutes of football only coming last month in the National League Cup win at Sutton United.
He completed another 90 minutes in the Seagullsâ 3-3 draw at West Ham United last Friday, while his successful comeback continued last night with a stunning 20-yard strike in the Vertu Trophy draw at Barnet.
âThe lads told me to shoot, so I went for it!â smiled the midfielder, whose composure on the ball and creativity stood out on the night. âIâve done that before in training and as soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in. It was a really nice feeling and now I just want to kick on after what has been a difficult time with my injuries.â
Robertson, or âRobboâ as heâs known to his teammates, admits itâs been a tough start to life as a Seagull but he is now looking forward to what he hopes will be a successful career on the south coast.
âWhen you join a new club it takes time to settle in, then to get injured pretty much straight away, it was difficult. Youâve got to go through the rehab and itâs been pretty hard journey getting back into the team.
âI found it difficult to get myself up to speed again, to pick up where I was, but I feel like Iâm in that position now. I feel like Iâm getting back into my rhythm again.â
Robertsonâs longer-term target is to break into the senior squad, which would mean linking up once again on the pitch with Tommy Watson, a player he knows well from his time on Wearside.

âWe used to play together at Sunderland in the under-18s before he moved up to the 21s and first team, and heâs a really good lad â itâs nice to have him around,â he added.
âIâve been able to show him around and itâs been nice to see a familiar face, but to be honest, Iâve settled really well down here. It takes a bit of adjustment not seeing your family as much, but the lads have been really good, along with all the staff, so Iâve enjoyed it so far.
âOf course itâs been a difficult time on the pitch but hopefully thatâs all behind me now. It would be great to break into the first-team squad at some point, but at the moment Iâm just focused on playing 90 minutes consistently to get my fitness back up to where it needs to be, keep performing and then see where it takes me."
