Jan Paul van Hecke joked that Albion might be too good against the top six in the Premier League after our 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
That victory against Chelsea means we have now taken seven of our eight points this season against teams that are competing in this year’s Champions League.
“I think we showed already too many times that we are really good against the top six, maybe too good because we have got all our points this season against them!” the Dutch defender said. “Now we need to do it every week and against every opponent. We have a really good team, but we need to be consistent in every game.
“Hopefully we can keep going from here. Our performances have been somewhere between okay and good, some parts have been good and some haven’t, but we need to find some consistency. If you start from Saturday then it’s really pleasing for everyone.
“I am really happy. It was a great performance, especially after we were 1-0 down – it was a tough start. But I think everyone reacted really well and we deserved the win.”
The 25-year-old enjoyed his battle with former Albion forward Joao Pedro, who prior to Saturday’s game had been directly involved in five goals in four games (two goals, three assists) for Chelsea.
“He’s a good player. I know him from last year. I knew before it was going to be a battle, I m quite happy with how it went," added van Hecke.
Battling Albion came from 1-0 down to claim all three points at Stamford Bridge. A brace from Danny Welbeck and one from Maxim De Cuyper sealed the victory. Club photographer James Boardman was at Stamford Bridge to capture the action.
“I know if you go really tight and try to fight then you have a good a chance, you always need to be careful because he can turn quickly and do something special. I really concentrated and I think I did a good job.”
At the other end of the pitch Danny Welbeck came off the bench to score twice, including our equaliser.
“I think Danny has been incredible and is one of the best professionals I’ve ever seen,” Jan Paul continued. “I am so happy that he scored those two goals – how he does it is unbelievable. To see a good Danny Welbeck is really important for us.”
