Miah Oriola was the standout performer as Albion U21s secured an excellent 4-2 win at Fulham on Friday with his two-goal contribution made all the more impressive by the fact that he only received the call to play in the early hours of the morning!
The livewire winger had been on the bench for the first team the previous night for the UEFA Conference League game in Czechia against FK Jablonec – along with fellow under-21 teammates Steven Hall, Shane Nti and Younes Ibrahim – and only found out he would be starting against Fulham when he touched down in Sussex.
“I got the message at around 3am, so it was quite late notice,” he smiled. “But I always wanted to play. I just wanted to take the first-team experience from there and bring it into the under-21s. I’m happy we got the result.

“We started well and started sharp. We wanted to keep things tight, keep possession and make sure we didn’t concede any goals. At 2-0, we were on fire, but then the game became a bit more transitional. But we stayed together, and that was what took us all the way to the three points.”
The left winger was a constant menace to the Fulham rearguard, netting a superb individual first-half goal when he showed good feet before rifling the ball into the corner of the net. He also showed his composure with his late second, lofting the ball over the onrushing keeper before tucking it home.
“I just tried to beat my man and, as soon as I got some space, I thought, ‘Let me just let it fly!’” Miah said of his opening strike. “I tried to aim inside the post, and that’s where it went, so it was a very good finish. But I was delighted with both goals. They both helped the team get the result we deserved.”
Oriola has one first-team appearance to his name, having come on as a late substitute in the 3-0 win against Leeds United at the Amex last November. He has since been involved in a number of matchday squads, and his focus now is to keep pushing for another appearance in Fabian HĂŒrzeler’s side.
“I’ve just got to be consistent in games and training,” he stated. “I’ve got to work hard, have the right attitude and then, hopefully, fingers crossed, I’ll get in there again. That’s my focus, but I know it will only happen if I keep playing well and doing the right things for this team.”
