We’ve had some great moments against United, but the first one that springs to mind, and probably the best one, is Alexis scoring in the 98th minute against them at the Amex. The guts he showed was incredible and what a feeling when his penalty went in the top corner. I think we knew we were getting European football at that point.
Choosing the number five

Gus Poyet called me into his office before the first season at the Amex and told me I was going to be starting the season and playing consistently, so I needed a new number. He had all the free ones laid out and I was nervously trying to decide before he demanded me to pick the five. It showed he rated me, and I was going to play regularly – and I’ve been five ever since.

That day was a special one for the club and it was a proud moment for me and my family to lead Albion out at Wembley. Both our semi-final trips have been disappointing in the end, but walking out against City sticks out. Our end was completely packed, I loved the Withdean to Wembley flag and the atmosphere our fans created was special. Hopefully we are back there with more success soon.

I scored a lot of goals growing up playing as a midfielder, but scoring for the first team was an amazing feeling which I hadn’t felt before. It was a cup game against Cheltenham, and I ended up doing the Ronaldo celebration in front of an empty North Stand! I think the excitement got the better of me. In the end, I finished top scorer that season with seven!

I feel like that game is forgotten about in our European campaign a bit just because of the ‘bigger’ teams we faced, but the atmosphere that night in Athens was incredible and we did well to win it. It meant we were into the knockouts and at full time the scenes were so special. I remember heading over towards our fans first and then the whole squad were with me. Our fans followed us everywhere, so it was brilliant to enjoy that moment with them.
Look out for our special tribute to Lewis in Sunday’s match programme.
