Pascal Gross says he is relishing the role he has as a senior player even more.

The departures of James Milner, Adam Webster, Solly March and Joel Veltman means more responsibility for the German midfielder in helping to get the squad Premier League ready, but he enjoys the challenge.

“We have lost some big characters and great teammates in the dressing room, as well as great footballers - a lot of characters that have helped Brighton to be where they are now,” said Gross.

“The players behind those who have left need to step up, but the younger players have already shown they are capable of good things and now they need to step up and help us.

“Mine is a big role. I lead the team with guys like Lewis Dunk and Jason Steele. We need to make the team tick on and off the pitch, to perform. We need to support them and also to show what it takes to win in the Premier League.”

Albion have been in Vienna this week for a training camp which finishes with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Strasbourg on Saturday and Gross says the squad have had a good preparation in Austria.

“The set-up in Austria is incredible, the food reminds me a little bit of home!," he added.

“The training ground and pitches are the perfect set-up to prepare for the new season.

“The new players have settled in. You get to know each other really well when you spend a long period of time together, not only on the training pitch but around the hotel.

“It has been a chance for them to grow into the team and to feel comfortable and be themselves as soon as possible. It will help us prepare to perform at the best level. We have worked really well.”
