Brighton & Hove Albion are pleased to share plans for a brand-new Heritage Wall – which will be a striking new feature, designed to honour our supporters and their enduring bond with the club, in a modern, longer lasting way.
The new wall will be located opposite the entrance to the main West Stand, right at the heart of the stadium, and as far as is possible will replicate the messages and sentiments from all tiles on the current wall opposite the club's North Stand offices at no cost to supporters.
This newly-designated area, which will not be open to any new messages, is at the heart of the Amex’s main stand entrance area and offers greater weather protection than most outer parts of the Amex.
Furthermore, it is not as congested on matchdays, ensuring fans have space for those personal matchday moments.
The wall will feature tiles of the same size and dimensions as the current bricks, but crafted from a more durable material to ensure far great longevity. It will sit in front of the 'cliff face' in a longer horizontal design, with a maximum height of six feet, allowing easy access and clear visibility of every tile, a better solution than the current wall where some of the higher placed tiles are not accessible to touch or view.
Work on the design of the new wall is already underway, and all Albion supporters will be given the option to vote on their preferred look from choices the club will propose.
Our aim is to have the new wall in place BEFORE any removal of the existing tiles is scheduled, ensuring continuity for those who have previously contributed to this special part of our history.
As advised earlier this week, the current wall will remain in place until at least the end of the season allowing fans to visit, view and take any personal photographs before the change.
The Fan Advisory Board (FAB) has already been advised of the plan for the new wall, and will also be involved throughout this process. We look forward to working closely with the FAB and to ensure we create a new feature for our stadium that all Albion fans can be proud of.
This initiative follows on from the recent open letter from our chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber, reaffirming our commitment to preserving the heritage, messages and memories of long-standing fans featured on the current heritage wall that all help to make the Amex so special.
Very sadly, with many of the existing stones having degraded to varying degrees over recent years despite a regular programme of maintenance, we will not be able to return the stones to supporters as any removal process will likely see them crack further or disintegrate.
Everyone at the club is acutely aware of the sentimental value of the existing stones, and the desire of supporters to ensure those memories are preserved for as long as possible, hence the plan to create a new more weatherproof wall, and we remain entirely committed to ensuring we manage the transition in the most sensitive way possible.
Further details, including timelines and design options, will be shared in the new year. In the meantime, thank you to all supporters for your patience and understanding while we manage the transition.
