Albion midfielder James Milner has called time on an outstanding career as he confirmed his retirement from professional football.
James bows out as one of the Premier League’s all‑time great servants, having made the most appearances in the competition’s history.
He featured in 658 matches in the competition and his durability and professionalism sets a benchmark for modern players, underlining a career defined not only by silverware and success, but by remarkable endurance at the very highest level of English football.
He joined us in the summer of 2023, and instantly brought a wealth of experience, leadership and professionalism to the club.
Across three seasons, he played a key role both on and off the pitch, contributing to one of the most memorable periods in the club’s history by playing in our first European campaign and helping secure qualification for European competition for only the second time in our history this season. He made 46 appearances for the club.
One of the Premier League’s most decorated and respected players, Milner’s career spanned 24 seasons at the highest level. Having made his debut for Leeds United aged just 16, he went on to represent Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Albion – as well as earning 61 England caps.
He announced his decision on an Instagram post earlier today, writing, "After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. I’m incredibly proud of the journey I’ve been on, and grateful to every club, teammate and supporter who has been part of it.
‘To finish my career at Brighton was a real honour. Being part of this group, and contributing in any way I could to another historic chapter for the club is something I will always cherish."
During a career that included multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and European honours, Milner is widely recognised as the model pro, due to his consistency, versatility and longevity. He also represented England at two World Cups and two European Championships.
Everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion would like to thank James for his outstanding service to the game and to the club, and we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.
