A unique celebration of our 125th anniversary

George's unique illustration of the club's history is on display at the Amex

Talk us through that initial conversation with the club, and how it developed into a piece for the 125th anniversary.

I’ve lived in Brighton for 24 years now with my young family, and football is a constant conversation here, whether you are at a cafe, the pub, or the park. The Amex stadium is fantastic, and football is a huge part of our brilliant community. I love storytelling and seeing how something develops, and the history of our beautiful club has so many ups and downs. It started as a concept sketch about eight years ago. I produced a first draft and as the 125th anniversary celebrations started building momentum it seemed a brilliant time to reconnect. We wanted to see if we could celebrate 125 years of our awesome club in one central illustration.

What inspired you to display Brighton's history specifically in this incredible way?

There are so many stories to tell, so many facts, archives, and people who have that one specific memory. I want to embed all of that information. There are over 450 stories in this one piece of artwork. Rather than needing to read about it in a book, I wanted to visually represent it - whether that’s through a football, a video camera, a specific part of Brighton, or a football boot. Drawing those layers of facts is really what it’s all about.

What moments gave you a nice flashback?

There are so many. Managerial changes, getting promoted to the Premier League, and qualifying for Europe in 2023.

It must feel like a nice round moment to have this artwork displayed now, considering the key milestones achieved recently.

Absolutely. We've gone from dark days when the club nearly disappeared completely, to celebrating where we are today - competing against the best clubs in the world.

What little details are your personal favourites that you want fans to see?

I often hide lots of little details; some get picked up while others people really have to search to find. We have references along the seafront to all the landmarks: the pavilion, the pier, and the Seven Stars pub where the club began. There are also shout-outs relevant to specific players, like Lewis Dunk's 500 appearances. It's all in here, spanning from 1901 through to 2026.
