Yves Bissouma honoured his late aunt with the goal he scored against Everton on Saturday.
The 24-year-old volleyed home his second goal for the club in the 4-2 defeat and he spoke about why the goal was extra special to him.
He said, “It was a nice goal for me, I saw the keeper to the side slightly and thought I’d try my luck.
“It was in memory to my Aunt Agnes who died recently, we were very close and something I felt like I wanted to do.
Yves Bissouma takes on the Arsenal midfield.
“She was laid to rest on the same day of the Everton match and that’s why I dedicated it to her. It’s been difficult for my family so that was my way of honouring her.”
The Malian is now in his third season and says his focus is always on how he can improve having settled into life in England.
“I just want to keep working and do my best to win, we’re a determined group and we’re looking ahead to the next match now.
“This season will be better for me than my last two seasons. I had the injury last year and that was tough for me.
“I was in a new country and was alone for the first time, but after a while my family came with me and now I understand more English and have a teacher which is good for me.”
Bissouma’s spectacular strike in the defeat to Everton at the weekend doubled his tally for Albion.
Yves Bissouma is congratulated by Adam Webster after scoring at Burnley.
His first was an equally impressive one in the 2-1 win away to Burnley on the final day of last season.
“My two goals so far have been very good, but the most important thing is that the team win.
“Against Burnley it was the perfect day because I got my first for the club and we won the match. At Everton on Saturday the goal was good again, but the team didn’t get the three points.
“People will say to me about the good goals, but I’m here for the team not for myself. Football is about the collective. If I score a good goal and we win then I’m happy.”
