Evan Ferguson opened his Serie A account for the campaign as Roma beat Cremonese on Sunday.

The Irishman made a goalscoring return from an ankle injury, showing his composure to curl home from 12 yards in the 3-1 win. Gian Piero Gasperini's team sit two points clear at the top of Serie A after 12 games.

From one table-topping side to another, Carl Rushworth’s Coventry City came from behind to beat West Brom 3-2, with former Albion man Jayson Molumby sent off for the Baggies. The Sky Blues are now seven points clear at the top of the second tier.

Chasing a play-off spot in the Championship, Birmingham City beat Norwich City 4-1. James Beadle started while Eiran Cashin was an unused substitute in the victory. The Blues are now a point off sixth.

Sticking with goalkeepers, Melina Loeck made a terrific return to action as she made six saves in Hammarby Women’s 3-1 win over Ajax in the UEFA Europa Cup on Thursday.

Having been involved in seven goals in his previous three League One appearances, it was a quiet afternoon for Amario Cozier-Duberry as Bolton played out a goalless draw with Bradford City, while Kamari Doyle started in Reading’s 1-1 draw with Rotherham. Mark O’Mahony was introduced with half an hour to go, with the Royals equalising in the 78th minute.

Caylan Vickers had a far more enjoyable afternoon with Barnsley as the Tykes thumped Luton Town 5-0 at Oakwell. The winger came on for the final 15 minutes.

Igor Julio made his first Premier League start for West Ham as they stormed into a 2-0 lead at Bournemouth, before the Cherries came back to snatch a point at the Vitality Stadium. The point moved the Irons out of the relegation zone.

It was heartbreak for LAFC in the MLS Western Conference semi-finals, as they were beaten on penalties by Vancouver Whitecaps. LA were 2-0 down before Andrew Moran nodded the ball down for Son Heung-min to pull one back. The South Korean then made it 2-2 with a wonderful free-kick.

They would come up short though despite hitting the woodwork three times in extra-time as they were beaten 4-3 on spot-kicks.

In League Two, Jacob Slater got 90 minutes under his belt as Harrogate Town were beaten 2-0 at home by high-flying Walsall, while Olivia Johnson started for Bristol City in their 1-0 Subway League Cup defeat to Tottenham, which saw the Robins exit the competition.

North of the border, Jess Pegram started in Rangers Women’s 3-0 win at Motherwell, with the defender getting 75 minutes under her belt as the Gers moved up to third in the table.

In France, Matt O’Riley was brought on for the final 20 minutes of Marseille’s 5-1 win over Nice, while Ibrahim Osman came on in the last minute during bottom of the table Auxerre’s goalless draw with European-spot chasers Lyon.
