Substitution

Double substitution for Albion as Diego Gomez and Danny Welbeck are replaced by Matt O'Riley and Joel Veltman. Danny is given a nice round of applause from the home fans, having been on loan here during his Manchester United days.

EIGHT MINUTES ADDED TIME

For context, there were seven minutes added on in the second half against Arsenal last time out.

Goal!

Minteh
Former Newcastle man Yankuba Minteh puts us front as his cross from very near the by-line beats Ellborg at his near post! Sunderland aren't happy for a small push in the build up, but it doesn't matter, we're 1-0 up!

Yellow Card

Diego Gomez trips a Sunderland player as they burst over the halfway line. Yellow card.

VAR

Albion are saved by VAR as Chris Rigg capitalises on a couple of missed opportunities to clear, firing past Verbruggen. The goal is given, but VAR spot Alderete offside in the build up.

Half-Time

Nothing to separate the teams after 45 minutes.

TWO MINUTES ADDED ON

40'

RIGG'S BICYCLE-KICK IS WIDE

We ended up having a very entertaining opening 25 minutes, but since then it's been relatively quiet. The ball is swung into the Albion box, Dunk intercepts but only sends it into the air, which Rigg bicycle-kicks wide of the bottom left corner. Verbruggen then denies Geertruida's shot from 25 yards. It would have taken quite a considerable error for that to sneak in.
24'

TERRIFIC MOVE, HINSHELWOOD SHOULD SCORE

That's a fantastic Albion attack as van Hecke's ball goes all the way through for Welbeck. He runs down the right before finding Hinshelwood in the middle, but his shot is straight at Ellborg when he had the goal at his mercy!
17'

SUSTAINED ALBION PRESSURE

Minteh has a couple of crosses from the by-line but Sunderland get them away both times before Kadioglu's right footed effort from the edge of the box is blocked. Danny Welbeck is playing a part in all the Albion attacks.
13'

WELBECK'S SHOT EASY FOR ELLBORG

Danny Welbeck takes a decent touch on the edge of the box and sends an effort towards goal with his left boot, but it takes a nick off a Sunderland defender, which makes it very easy for Ellborg to gather.
12'

DUNK OFF THE LINE

That stops an absolutely certain Sunderland goal as Chemsdine Talbi manages to get to a free ball in the box first and send it past Verbruggen, but Dunk is there on the line to block and Bart gathers it.
11'

VAR

Lewis Dunk's volley from the edge of the box is blocked by the arm of Ballard, but it's from such close range it'd be a very harsh one to give against the Sunderland defender.
9'

INCREDIBLE SAVE FROM ELLBORG

Minteh gets down the left, swings in a lovely low ball for Hinshelwood in the middle, but Ellborg gets a foot in the way of the Albion man's first time finish, sending it behind for a corner!
5'

FIVE MINUTES PLAYED

Sunderland have just had a corner easily dealt with by the Albion defence, but other than that nothing has really happened. The early promise of a loud home crowd has dimmed, but we're not far into this one yet.

HERE COME THE TEAMS

The speakers are absolutely deafening, as they blare out Ready to Go by Republica. It's over now. Just pleased that anyone has got eardrums after that.

DUNK MAKES 500TH ALBION START

Lewis Dunk will start his 500th game for Albion this afternoon, although will be walking a bit of a tightrope, as he sits just one yellow card away from a two-game suspension. "I think he's experienced enough to handle these kinds of situations," Fabian Hurzeler said. "He's my captain, he's my leader. He will always be on the pitch if he's 100% fit. "So we don't try to manage his minutes, only if he has some problems with his body. But overall, I've picked him because I believe in him, that he can handle this kind of situation. If it happens, we have players who can replace him."

Fabian Hurzeler is expecting a raucous atmosphere at the Stadium of Light today. "We expect a loud stadium. We expect an opponent with a lot of self-confidence because they have had a really good season. So that's a big challenge."
