Mark O'Mahony celebrates his sixth goal in five PL2 games this season.

A last-gasp goal from Mark O'Mahony rescued a point for our under-21s against 10-man Newcastle United in Premier League 2 on Saturday.

It looked like the Magpies would come away with all three points after Lewis Miley's first-half goal, but O’Mahony’s ingenious flick in the 97th-minute secured a 1-1 draw and means Albion are now seven unbeaten in all competitions.

After an even opening, where both keepers were called into action, the visitors took control of the game as Shannon Ruth's side were uncharacteristically sloppy.

Goalkeeper Killian Cahill twice kept out Miley, first with a stunning fingertip save from a 20-yard free-kick and then with a superb reaction stop from close range, as the hosts were penned into their own half.

Newcastle went ahead shortly after the half-hour mark.

And Miley's persistence was rewarded as his drilled strike went through a morass of players and squirmed past Cahill in the 34th minute.

Luca Barrington and Casper Nilsson went closest for Albion but they deservedly trailed at the break.

There was a greater sense of urgency when the second half began from Ruth’s team, and Louis Flower had a glorious chance to draw his team level from inside the six-yard box, only for Jude Smith to smother his effort.

Albion's chances of getting back into the game were boosted when Newcastle's Lucas De Bolle received a second yellow 10 minutes after the break but the visitors nearly extended their lead as Dylan Stephenson's toe-poked effort went just wide.

Mark O'Mahony flicks the ball into the back of the net to equalise.

Jack Hinchy, Samy Chouchane, Barrington, and Marcus Ifill all had good chances to grab a late equaliser but just as hope of a point seemed lost, O'Mahony's moment of magic earned Albion a share of the spoils.

Ruth’s side, who have only lost once this season in a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United on the opening day, next face Derby County in the league on Friday.

Lineup: Cahill; Nilsson (Ifill 85), Jackson, Atom (Kavanagh 74), Samuels (Slater 66); Baker-Boaitey, Hinchy, Chouchane, Barrington, O'Mahony, Flower (Duffus 66)

Subs not used: Reid.
