Neal Maupay says another Albion late show illustrates the strong mentality of the team.

The striker’s cross was diverted past his own keeper by Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen as the derby finished 1-1 for the second time this season.

Maupay had seen a first-half goal disallowed by VAR and Pascal Gross missed a penalty but Albion kept going and levelled with three minutes left.

“We never gave up. We’d have loved to win but it’s one of those games where we have to take one point. I think it showed the strong mentality of the team,” said Maupay.

Neal Maupay's smart play saw Palace defender Joachim Andersen put the ball beyond his own goalkeeper.

“We played well in the first half but they came back and showed more intensity, and caused us some problems.

“We missed the penalty and had the goal disallowed and it is hard to control a game for 90 minutes. I thought the keeper dived into me but sometimes VAR and the referee will be on our side, we can’t complain – it’s football.

“But even when we are 1-0 or 2-0 down we keep pushing and playing our game. There will be times when we’re not able to come back but we keep going. We’d have loved to win it for the fans, but I think they saw that we gave everything.”
