Maisie Symonds won the Player of the Match award against West Ham on Wednesday night.

Maisie Symonds says Albion's 3-1 win over West Ham shows they have "come out stronger" after a brutal run of fixtures against the Women's Super League top four teams.

Melissa Phillips's side made it six points from a possible six in the Continental Tyres League Cup, following their 3-0 victory at Birmingham City last month, with an impressive triumph at Broadfield Stadium on Wednesday night.

Goals from Guro Bergsvand, captain Vicky Losada, and Veatriki Sarri helped them return to winning ways after a 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the WSL at the weekend.

And after a 4-2 reverse to Chelsea, a 2-2 draw with Manchester United, a 1-0 win at Manchester City, and the defeat to the Gunners over the past month, Symonds feels Albion, who let in a late goal through West Ham's Hawa Cissoko, are certainly going in the right direction.

Symonds: Recent run has made us stronger

"We can take confidence from this win. From the block [of games] we just had we have come out stronger which is very hard to do after playing those top four teams," she said. "But coming out of that and into this one was a real test to show if we have improved and we proved we have."

Symonds, who was voted player of the match after an impressive display in Sussex, felt the scoreline flattered West Ham at times, but was happy to avenge their 2-0 WSL loss to Rehanne Skinner's last month.

"I am really pleased with the performance, of course we wanted to win because we wanted to get one back on West Ham for that loss at the start of the season. But the performance was really good and we played really good football which is even more pleasing," she said.

"We just wanted to keep creating chances and we knew we would take them eventually. It was frustrating when we were just 1-0 up because we could have been three or four ahead by half-time but we kept playing the same way and eventually we got a couple more.

"I am really happy that we won because we haven't been winning as much here and we have great fans and great crowds come in so it's more important we got the three points."

Incidentally, head coach Phillips also paid credit to under-19s Jess Pegram and Grace McEwen, the latter of which came on for her first-team debut against the Hammers. Both of whom will hope to be involved in more matchday squads, with Liverpool their next test in the WSL on Sunday.

"Grace and Jess have both been in training with us for the last couple of months in preparation for potential debuts and pushing themselves alongside the team - they've been excellent," added Phillips.

"It's a shame we couldn't reward both of them with an opportunity tonight (Wednesday) but to see Grace get in and have a few really key moments is a memory she will take away and both of them have a bright future."
