Melissa Phillips’s West Ham press conference

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's game against the Irons, Melissa Phillips said, "It was a really competitive match last time we played them earlier in the season. This would be a third time that we've played them including a preseason fixture as well, and both sides have adapted little bits about our team since we last met.

"They're super resilient and hard working out of possession, and that's where they made it really difficult on us in terms of just making a really scrappy game. They always apply pressure on the ball and we learned a lot about ourselves in terms of our own options and spaces that we need to occupy to be able to play out of the pressure better.

"We're looking forward to a fun, competitive fixture under the lights. It's always good to see WSL opposition in these games and see how some different players line up with that and we're really looking forward to it."

Form Guide

While Albion were losing 3-0 to Arsenal on Sunday, West Ham went down 3-2 at home to Aston Villa in the WSL. The Hammers won 2-0 at the Broadfield Stadium last month in our first home league game of the season and followed it up with a 2-1 victory against Charlton Athletic in their Conti Cup opener.

But since then, they have picked up just a point from five league matches and were beaten 5-0 at Manchester United in their last league game. They sit 11th in the table.

Albion have come out of a block of games against the top four with four points.

WSL Highlights: West Ham 4 Albion 5

Until their 2-0 triumph in early October, the Hammers had never beaten Albion with victories in each of our last six games against them in the WSL prior to that game.

We did the double over West Ham last season, winning 5-4 away from home before a header from Kayleigh Green sealed a 1-0 victory at the Broadfield Stadium in the return fixture. The sides also met in the Conti Cup in January and after a goalless draw we won the penalty shoot-out 3-0.

Player to watch

Megan Walsh departed Albion in the summer.

One Hammer who will need no introduction to Albion fans is goalkeeper Meg Walsh, who ended a four-year association with the Seagulls in May and signed for West Ham in the summer. Walsh won her first Republic of Ireland cap while with Albion and made 76 appearances for the club after signing for us from Yeovil Town in 2019. Walsh made her West Ham debut in the 2-1 Conti Cup victory over Charlton but has been understudy to Australian Mackenzie Arnold in West Ham’s WSL fixtures.
