Head coach Melissa Phillips addresses the players after their 1-0 win against Manchester City.

Melissa Phillips said she 'couldn't be prouder' of her side after Albion's first-ever Women's Super League win over Manchester City on Sunday.

A stunning defensive effort and substitute Geummin Lee's 81st-minute goal were enough to secure a 1-0 win at Joie Stadium, ending our nine-match streak without a victory against City in the WSL.

While this was a momentous result, particularly as it ended City's 21-match unbeaten run at home in the league, head coach Phillips said there are still parts of their game they can work on with another tough game to come on Sunday at home to Arsenal.

Vicky Losada had an influential game in midfield against Manchester City.

"I am super proud of the group, I think we deserved it. We probably deserved a little bit more from the game last weekend [a 2-2 draw against Manchester United] and to come here and keep a team that has been so good in possession and scoring so many goals and pick up a clean sheet is just a credit to the group, along with the adaptability and resilience we are starting to build," she said.

"The most important thing is we performed well enough for the result. We kept a lot of their opportunities at bay. In the second half we defended our box incredibly well and that is ultimately the most important thing.

"When we dropped points earlier this season we said we have to attack and defend our boxes better and still I think there are areas for growth but it's a huge three points, it's a step in the right direction, and I couldn't be prouder of the group."

Elisabeth Terland came close to adding to her six goals this season against City.

Phillips said at half time she told her players to be even braver when pressing the opposition and that seemed to do the trick as Pauline Bremer won the ball 35 yards from the home side's goal, drove into the box, and beautifully set up fellow former City player Lee for the winner.

The Albion boss was delighted to pick up four points against the two Manchester teams but the fixture list does not get any easier when they host the Gunners.

"We changed our shape [after half time] and we just asked them [the players] to be brave with getting pressure on the ball. That is the identity we want to have and who we want to be and I think we did a much better job getting that," said Phillips. We also knew that would allow us to be more dangerous in wide areas and get on the ball a little bit more. We said there would be one chance in the game and we took it.

"We were clinical in those moments going forward. Of course, there are going to be loads of areas that we can continue to build and grow on but this is another performance. It's a step in the right direction and it's a really tough block of games, so the more we can build the better off we will be on the other side."
