Kaoru Mitoma wants to build on his scintillating start to the campaign by catching up with Solly March’s goal tally.
Our Japan international scored his first of the campaign against Wolves on Saturday with one of the finest individual goals you’re likely to see in the Premier League this season.
Having got the better of Nelson Semedo on the left, Kaoru burst into the box – escaping Max Kilman's attempt to drag him to the ground – before calmly finding the bottom right corner.
“The moment I dribbled past the first challenge I found space," Kaoru explained. "While dribbling, I was like 'maybe I’ll go through', in terms of my speed, plus they were late to cover, which was pretty lucky too.
“I wanted to do something the opponent won’t like. And especially in the first half, we had space on the side. The quality was great and in terms of dribbling I think I stood out which was good.
My goal and assists so far are just a number which will not matter for the upcoming game. I have to try and score like that again.”
The goal and his assist for Pervis Estupinan took him up to a goal and two assists for the season after setting up Solly's opener against Luton Town.
March's brace at Molineux took his tally up to three goals for the season - a target Mitoma is chasing.
“The head coach did say we did really well, however, March has score twice so I have to keep up!
“But he [Roberto De Zerbi] has told us more about the one goal we lost against Wolves, so we have to brush up our quality as we are always aiming for the top.”
