Are these our ten best Premier League results ever?

Many fans are saying that Albion’s 3-0 victory away to Arsenal was the club’s best performance since being promoted to the Premier League in 2017. But there has been plenty of competition for that accolade across the club’s six seasons back in the top flight. Here are our top ten.

10. Feb 3 2021 Liverpool 0 Brighton 1

This result would have been higher up if it had come against an in-form Liverpool rather than one in the middle of a poor run at Anfield, but any victory in front of the Kop is to be cherished. Mo Salah missed a good first-half chance, but so did Dan Burn, and it was Albion who made the breakthrough 11 minutes into the second half. Solly March slung over a cross from the right, Burn nodded the ball back across goal, and Steven Alzate just beat teammate Leandro Trossard to volley in. Liverpool pressed after that but if anything it was Graham Potter’s team that made the better openings.

9. May 18 2021 Brighton 3 Man City 2

There was double cause for celebration with fans back inside the Amex post pandemic to see Albion’s first top-flight victory over Pep Guardiola’s ten-man City. The dismissal of Joao Cancelo did not seem to affect the newly-crowned champions as they took a 2-0 lead. But Leandro Trossard got Albion back in the game when he took a misplaced pass from Rodri, sat City defender Ruben Dias on his backside twice and finally thrashed the ball into the North Stand net. Adam Webster headed Albion level before Dan Burn scored an improbable winner, prodding home at the second attempt from a horizontal position.

8. Oct 20 2017 West Ham 0 Brighton 3

This was arguably the evening when Albion truly announced their arrival as a Premier League club. Glenn Murray put Chris Hughton’s gold-clad side ahead with a clever header from Pascal Gross’s free kick and Jose Izquierdo doubled the lead with a sensational strike, cutting in from the left and unleashing a right-foot rocket that Hammers goalkeeper Joe Hart got a hand to but couldn’t keep out. Murray completed the rout with a late third from the penalty spot.

7. Dec 4 2018 Brighton 3 Crystal Palace 1

There has to be room on this list for a victory over the old enemy and this one was achieved despite the dismissal of Shane Duffy soon after Glenn Murray had drawn first blood with a penalty in off the crossbar. On came Leon Balogun as substitute to take over from Duffy and volley in the second with his first touch. And then Florin Andone hared away down the left onto Bernardo’s clearance before beating James Tomkins twice and slotting home the fourth. Wilfried Zaha’s late penalty was an irrelevance.

6. May 7 2022 Brighton 4 Manchester United 0

The club’s biggest margin of victory in a Premier League game at the time was won with some scintillating football. Moises Caicedo beat David de Gea from outside the penalty area to net his first Albion goal, and Marc Cucurella also broke his duck from closer range. But Albion’s third was peak Potterball, from Robert Sanchez’s exquisite pass out to Cucurella and the fullback’s deft control, via Leandro Trossard’s ball inside to Pascal Gross to the German’s stroll past World Cup winner Rafael Varane and calm finish. Trossard chested in the fourth, Alexis Mac Allister hit a post and Sanchez made a superlative save to keep the sheet clean.

5. April 2 2023 Brighton 6 Wolves 0

Albion’s biggest top-flight win in both goals scored and margin of victory came after Roberto De Zerbi shocked the crowd before the game by benching the overworked Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Kaoru Mitoma. But Billy Gilmour stole the show in their absence, Julio Enciso shone in Mitoma’s role on the left and Pascal Gross, Deniz Undav and Danny Welbeck each grabbed a brace. Gross’s volley and Undav’s chip will both be fixtures on highlight reels for many years to come. Only the feebleness of the opposition prevents this display from being higher up the list.

4. Jan 14 2023 Brighton 3 Liverpool 0

The first of two home wins over the Reds in 15 days featured a dazzling performance from Solly March, who was in a rich vein of form. First the Sussex-born winger timed his run perfectly to prod Kaoru Mitoma’s diagonal pass under goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and he doubled the lead when he took a forward pass from Evan Ferguson and dispatched a left-foot stunner past the Brazilian keeper. Danny Welbeck then collected March’s headed flick, hooked the ball over Joe Gomez’s head and volleyed the third.  

3. May 4 2018 Brighton 1 Manchester United 0

Albion ensured their survival at the end of their first season back in the best league in world football by beating one of its biggest names. Jose Mourinho’s United were hoping to guarantee second place, so had plenty to play for, but Albion were in determined mood, which was exemplified by Pascal Gross’s headed winner in the 57th minute. Jose Izquierdo supplied the cross from the left and Gross leapt between lunging heads and boots to nod firmly goalwards. Marcos Rojo’s attempt to clear off the line was a split second too late and goal-line technology showed that the ball had crossed the line by a matter of millimetres.

2. Oct 29 2022 Brighton 4 Chelsea 1

As well as completing Albion’s set of victories over the big six clubs of the Premier League, this was a result to gladden the hearts of football romantics everywhere as the players sent a defiant message that you can take our head coach and player of the season, but taking three points will not prove quite so straightforward. It was also new head coach Roberto De Zerbi’s overdue first win as Albion boss, but well worth waiting for as Leandro Trossard put the Seagulls in front after only five minutes and own goals by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah made it 3-0 by half time. Chelsea pulled one back but Pascal Gross – who began the match at right back and finished it as a number ten – made sure in added time.

1. May 14 2023 Arsenal 0 Brighton 3

It wasn’t Albion’s first win at Arsenal or even our biggest away victory, but there are many reasons to consider this our finest Premier League performance. It was achieved despite a mounting injury list and followed a morale-sapping 5-1 home reverse at the hands of Everton. Moreover, it came against a team chasing the title, who themselves had just enjoyed an excellent 2-0 win away to Newcastle. Yet Albion resisted early pressure and imposed our game on the Gunners, opening the scoring through Julio Enciso’s opportunist header and pulling clear at the end with Deniz Undav’s perfectly-judged lob and Pervis Estupinan’s first goal for the club.
