Phillips eager to end season on a high

Albion will head north this weekend for their penultimate WSL fixture of the  season as they search for a double over Everton.

As the squad prepare for their final away match on the road, Phillips took time to reflect on her first six weeks at the club and the team's mindset shift which has helped them gain some important points in the last few games.

"The main areas of focus were to have a bit of energy, optimism and inspiration within the group," she said. "I think that it's important that we played with passion and with more structure in our out of possession identity."

"Those were the areas of focus to ensure we are as competitive as we can be in every match we go into. There has been a real shift in mindset in terms of how we operate and move forward.

Melissa Phillips's Everton press conference

"I think the players were yearning for a bit of consistency and higher standards in everything that we do and they've risen to that challenge."

The Albion boss recognised the team's position in the league table but insisted that the players and staff have been solely focused on each performance on the pitch as they prepare for Everton.

She added, "We've tried to play without pressure in all of our previous games and stayed focussed on what is required to be as competitive as possible. That is truly what we do in house, we focus on our own performances, growth and mindset to be better every day.

"It has taken the pressure off us as we're not completely focussed on the result but more the performance.

"Everton are a high-calibre outfit and after Wednesday's result (4-1 defeat to Chelsea) I'm sure they will respond. We've prepared and we know we can score goals, but equally we need to find a way to do that against teams higher up in the table like Everton are."
