Our men’s under-21s came from a goal down to beat Monaco under-21s 2-1 in a friendly on the French Riviera.
After going behind, Harry Mills’s through ball was picked up by Luca Barrington, who sprinted down the left before slotting in at the near post.
The turnaround was complete when Mark O’Mahony got on the end of Mills' corner to nod in at the back post, heading it into the ground to evade the Monaco keeper.
Under-21s head coach Shannon Ruth said, “I am really pleased with the result and the performance from the players. We had a young under-21s side playing – there were 11 under-18s in an 18-man squad going up against a strong Monaco side.
“I was really happy with the commitment from the group, what we tried to do and how we tried to play. It makes me optimistic and excited about what next season can look like, because a number of those players will be in and around the under-21 group next season.
“It gave us a good indication of what is to come, as well as to see what work we need to do for pre-season. It was good to get them together.
“We showed a good reaction to going a goal down and it was a nice bit of play in terms of build up for Luca's goal. Mark then scored a nice header from a set-piece.
“I am really pleased with the result and with the patterns and spells we had. It was a positive trip, with lots to learn from and lots to build on.”
