Head coach Melissa Phillips says building a new identity is an ongoing process for her squad as they prepare to return to Barclays Women's Super League action tonight.

Albion take on Everton at the Broadfield Stadium (7pm) knowing that a first win since November would lift them two places up to tenth in the table.

Phillips took plenty of positives from her first game in charge, a heartbreaking last-minute 3-2 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

"I'm incredibly pleased with the performance, we know that is the new standard for us," she said. "I thought the squad executed the game plan excellently. I'd not had a lot of time with the players coming off the back of the international window so I was really pleased with the attitude and application in the match.

"The way that they responded to the goals and the key moments will only propel us moving forward. The biggest priority is to give a good account of ourselves in the next handful of league matches. Saturday was a brilliant starting point and there are a lot of things for us to take away. We know that we can go toe to toe with these teams and put pressure on them."

Melissa Phillips's Everton press conference

Albion have seven league games to try and preserve their WSL status.

"We've looked at the final run of games and how we want to manage that," added Phillips. "As a team and a playing squad as a whole we go game by game - our full focus is on Everton and making sure that we get as much preparation done as possible both in the analysis room and on the pitch to put ourselves in a good position for the game.

"Our first and next most important test is going to be Everton, but long term it's a process of growth and building for us from here on. It's not just about staying in the league, it's about putting a stamp on who we are as Brighton women. We're just focussed on our performance and who we are trying to become."
