Evan Ferguson took a mere 17 minutes to hit the net on his first start for the Republic of Ireland in a 3-2 win over Latvia.

The 18-year-old was on hand to put the Irish 2-0 ahead and became the youngest goal scorer for his country since legendary forward Robbie Keane scored against Malta in 1998.

It caps a brilliant four days for Ferguson, who hit two goals against Grimsby on Sunday to help Albion reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

"A goal for your country, there's no better feeling. It happened and it goes so quick, but there's no other feeling like it.

“Growing up as a kid, coming to the games, and as a striker you just want to score a goal in front of the home fans and luckily today I did.

"At the end of the day, it's just another game of football, but it's obviously a special moment."

Ferguson: No better feeling

The young forward was quick to show his gratitude to all those who have helped him to this point in his career, and praised the Irish fans for their support, but refused to get carried away as the side look ahead to facing World Cup runners-up France in their first Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday.

"It is definitely a big part (support of others). I've been over in England for two years now, so all the time leading up to that move, it was all them trying to help me and trying to get me prepared for going over. So, it's big thanks to them.

"I think Irish people as a country, they all they all look to support you. And especially if you are doing well, then they look to support you. It is nice knowing that they're just looking out for you and want you to do well.

"My mind's just ready for Monday now. I think that's where I am at the minute. I don't get too carried away, so I'm just ready for Monday and hopefully we can get a result.’
