Elisabeth Terland fires home Albion's first-half equaliser.

Amy Merricks believes Albion’s performance in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City can be a turning point in their season.

The Seagulls were denied a point by a 90th-minute goal from City’s Khadija Shaw – her second of the game – after Elisabeth Terland equalised in the first half.

Merricks said, “I thought the performance was worthy of at least a point, and perhaps even three. I think this could be a real turning point if we can build on this going forward. We know we’re more than capable of competing in this league.

“I’m extremely proud of everyone – the players and the staff – and that is what we’re going to need in every game between now and the end of the season.”

Shaw had given City a 21st-minute lead, but Terland scored a terrific equaliser 12 minutes later.

“I thought we had a foothold in the game throughout. At times the second half became challenging but this was our second game in five days when we’ve played Chelsea, who are the champions, and Manchester City who are third. The players applied themselves and I was impressed with the unity of the group, I thought they were outstanding.

“We have got to build on this momentum. I think we can do even better but if we can repeat the performance today then we’ll be absolutely fine.”
