Scheuer faces Leicester in first WSL match as Albion boss.

It wasn't the result that Jens Scheuer wanted in his first match as head coach after seeing Albion defeated 3-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in their opening game of 2023.

Scheuer said, "We are disappointed with the result, we have to be honest. Leicester played better in the first half, we had good chances for the counter-attack but conceded the first goal a bit too easy."

"We came out in the second half wanting to change the result and I saw a team who never gave up.

Jens Scheuer's Leicester reaction

"We had two or three big chances to score, we didn't so we have to accept this result. We can change it in the future and every girl should be ready to change it.

"Leicester were physically stronger and this is what we will change, but it will be in time. Our training sessions will get higher and higher [intensity] to take us to the next level."

Julia Zigiotti captained Albion for the first time against Leicester City on Sunday.

Scheuer named three out of the four of his new signings to the squad, with Brianna Visalli also making an appearance when she replaced Dejana Stefanovic before the half-time break.

The German coach was pleased with their overall performance after just four days of training together, and emphasised that the full squad have a part to play in achieving their overall goals.

He added, "They all [new signings] played well for their first game. Dejana [Stefanovic] had to come off after problems with her back, all of them played well but the whole group has potential to make the next step.

"We had four days together because the new players weren't able to train with the team. We did the best and so did the staff. A big thing is that we also missed Megan Connolly, she wasn't able to start after the warm-up. It was another blow to the team, then Dejana followed and had to come off.

"The team wanted to come back in the second half, I saw that. That makes me a little bit more optimist for the next game, but we have to work on many things."
