WSL preview: Albion take on Leicester City

Our look-ahead to Sunday's WSL game at the King Power Stadium.

Albion travel to face Leicester the first time this season.

Albion head to the King Power Stadium on Sunday to take on Leicester in their first WSL game of the new year.

The squad will look to build positive momentum under their new management of Jens Scheuer in what is their first game since early December. 

Since the appointment of the German as head coach, the club have continued to strengthened their squad in the January transfer window with four new players in four days. 

Scheuer will look to start his run of games in a solid manner as they prepare for a challenging second half of the season.

Team news

At his pre-match press conference, Scheuer reported that there was a clean bill of health throughout the squad and every player would be fit for selection ahead of their match against Leicester.

Jens Scheuer said, “I'm looking forward to the game, it's a big stadium and I think we had a short time to prepare but we have used it well. We know how we want to play and defend. I can't wait to see the girls perform on the pitch. 

"We want to win every game, for us it's also important to show how we want to play on the pitch."

WSL Highlights: Albion 1 Leicester City 0

Leicester City joined the WSL last season and both games against the Foxes ended in 1-0 home wins. Maisie Symonds scored the only goal when we met at the Amex with a stoppage time free-kick.

It’s been a challenging first half of the season for Leicester with the Foxes suffering a defeat in each of their nine WSL matches. Their last match before the winter break ended in an 8-0 loss to leaders Chelsea.

The Foxes managed to put in a strong midweek performance against Sunderland in the Conti Cup when they won 5-0.

Aileen Whelan made 101 appearances for Albion.

Former Albion player, Aileen Whelan will be in the Leicester squad tomorrow after signing for the Foxes last season. Whelan made 101 appearances at Albion and scored 16 goals after joining us in 2017.

Stats and facts 

Jens Scheuer will be the third person to take charge of Albion in the Barclays WSL – Hope Powell lost her first game in September 2018 (0-1 vs Bristol City), while Amy Merricks won hers 5-4 against West Ham this season.

Albion's Danielle Carter has been involved in four goals in her seven Barclays WSL appearances this season (3 goals, 1 assist), one more than she managed in 21 games last term (2 goals, 1 assist).

Katie Robinson is the only Brighton player to have registered double figures for both shots (10) and chances created (14) in the Barclays WSL this season.
