Skipper Lewis Dunk says Albion can look back with great pride on 2022, despite the year ending with a 4-2 defeat to Premier League leaders on Saturday.

Albion will begin the new year eighth in the table ahead of Tuesday’s visit to Everton having achieved their highest top-flight finish (ninth) last season.

Dunk said, “I think it’s been a really good year. We achieved our top finish in the Premier League and we have started this season really well. We’re building something good and hopefully 2023 can be even more successful.

“I think you saw on Saturday with the way we kept going that we have got a great group of lads, and we’ve shown for a long time that we will fight for each other right to the end.

Extended PL Highlights: Albion 2 Arsenal 4

“It didn’t go our way against Arsenal but there were a lot of positives. We’ve got a long way to go under this manager but we’re taking steps and we’re enjoying it.”

Albion scored twice in the second half against the Gunners but Dunk admitted Albion had been punished for slips at the back.

“We didn’t start quite well enough, and you can’t beat a team like Arsenal conceding four goals like we did, which was frustrating,” he added.

“I think the character and willingness to try and get back in the game was excellent from the group and we have shown that before, so that’s a positive even though we lost.”
