Team news
Alexis Mac Allister will have two weeks off following Argentina's World Cup success.
"It's important that he has a moment of rest to enjoy with his family," Roberto De Zerbi said. "After one month of the World Cup where he has had to be strong because of the pressure and emotion, he needs a break. We will use other players while he is away.
"I would like to start the game with the players who trained in Dubai, but there are a few like Moises who are able to be in the starting XI."
The head coach is keen to give players who haven't featured as regularly this season as well.
"I want to give Billy Gilmour the chance to show what he can do, Julio Enciso and Levi Colwill are the same. Deniz Undav scored two goals against Villa in Dubai and is in a good moment. I have to give everyone an opportunity.
"Danny Welbeck and Adam Webster won't be missing for too long, but they won't be ready in time for Charlton."
Previous meetings
Albion’s record against the Addicks in recent outings is very good with four wins in their last five meetings. Last time at The Valley, in April 2016, goals from Sam Baldock, Jiri Skalak and Tomer Hemed secured a 3-1 win in the Championship. Charlton have only won one of the last 11 meetings, back in 2013.
Stats
Charlton won their only previous League Cup meeting with Brighton, a 2-1 away win in August 1973 when both sides were in the third tier.
Charlton are looking to reach the quarter-final of the League Cup for just the second time, previously doing so in 2006-07. However, they've won just one of their last 11 matches against top-flight opponents in the competition (D3 L7).
Albion are looking to reach the quarter-final of the League Cup for just the second time, previously doing so in 1978-79. Since their promotion to the Premier League in 2017, they've won all seven of their League Cup ties against sides from a lower division by an aggregate score of 16-1.
Brighton's Danny Welbeck has scored four goals in his last five League Cup games, more than he had in his first 21 appearances in the competition (3).
