Albion return to WSL action on Sunday when they take on Liverpool at the Broadfield Stadium, kick off 2pm.

Acting head coach Amy Merricks has been monitoring the players who have come back from international duty, some of whom were playing in Australia and New Zealand. Megan Connolly is continuing her recovery from a broken rib and is back in full training. Rebekah Stott and Maisie Symonds are also on the comeback trail.

Merricks's Liverpool press conference

Amy Merricks said in her press conference on Thursday afternoon, ”I know Matt Beard well and Liverpool are a really organised side. They have several individuals with very good WSL experience and they have exciting youngsters. So they will be setup well, I have no doubt that they will come at us during the game. We have to focus first and foremost on our performance and carrying over the intent we showed in the West Ham game."

Albion have won two of the previous three WSL meetings with the Reds including the last two, We last played Liverpool in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign when a goal from Aileen Whelan secured a narrow 1-0 home win in January 2020.

Player to watch

Liverpool have only scored three goals this season and they have all been netted by Katie Stengel. The 30-year-old, who joined the club last January, has played in America, Germany and Australia during her career, which began in 2013 when she joined Los Angeles Blues. Stengel previously worked with Reds’ boss Matt Beard at Boston Breakers.

Brighton have won two of their last three Barclays WSL games against promoted sides (L1), more than they had in their first seven such matches (W1 D1 L5).

Brighton have conceded a league-high 23 goals in the Barclays WSL this season, including 12 in their last two. However, only Leicester (2) have scored fewer than Liverpool (3) so far this term.

Having won their first Barclays WSL game of the season 2-1 against reigning champions Chelsea, Liverpool have lost each of their last five, scoring just once in this run.

Albion suffered their biggest ever Barclays WSL defeat in their last home game, going down 8-0 against Tottenham in what proved to be Hope Powell's last game in charge of the Seagulls.

Liverpool have lost 11 of their last 12 Barclays WSL away games, with the exception being a 1-0 victory at Bristol City in January 2020.

All three of Liverpool's Barclays WSL goals this season have been scored by Katie Stengel – two penalties against Chelsea, and a goal from open play against Manchester City.
