Andi Zeqiri has made seven appearances for Switzerland.

Andi Zeqiri’s good start to life with FC Basel could secure his place in Switzerland’s World Cup squad.

The on loan 23-year-old has seven goals in 19 appearances, including a brilliant strike against Lithuanian side Zalgiris in their recent Europa Conference League outing.

Basel are in mid-table in the Swiss Super League having not finished outside the top three since 2001.

“I am feeling good. I am enjoying my football, especially being in my home country. I want to carry that on now,” he said.

“When you play for a big club like FC Basel, who are not only famous in Switzerland but in Europe, you want to have more points and want to be higher in the table. But we are giving our best every day to make it a good season. We are fighting and are confident because we have a good team.

“I get on with my teammates and we all want to do the best we can for this club.

“Coming back to Switzerland, I already knew the level and what to expect. I am enjoying it. It’s a good club with great facilities and a good coach.”

The Swiss have reached the last 16 at three of the last four World Cups, but are in a tough group in Qatar as they battle with Brazil, Serbia and Cameroon for a place in the knockout stages.

“In every World Cup there is a surprise. We have a strong group overall. We can only focus on ourselves, but we believe in ourselves and we will give our best and enjoy the moment.

“Everyone wants to play at the World Cup and I can’t lie it’s at the back of my mind. But the most important thing is I focus on Basel and putting in performances.

“I have hopefully got a long career ahead of me and goals I want to achieve, not just the World Cup, so it helps to think like that rather than focus on one thing.”
