Hope Powell felt Albion did enough to get something from their opening League Cup tie against Birmingham City.

The home side triumphed 3-2 at St Andrew’s on Sunday despite second-half goals from Geummin Lee and Danielle Carter’s late penalty after we trailed 2-0 and 3-1 to the Championship outfit.

“I think we did enough to get a positive result although we didn’t start playing for 40 minutes, we were a bit too casual and they managed the game well," said Powell. "We knew it would be a difficult game and Birmingham, to their credit, took their chances and were a threat going forward.”

The positives for the head coach was being able to give minutes to players like Carter and Libby Bance and hand Yeni Park with her debut.

“I think Yeni did well, DC needed 90 minutes after recovering from Covid and the substitutions we made gave us a bit of impetus in the second half,” added Powell. “But we were guilty of taking too many touches around the box when it needed us to take on the shot and we probably didn’t work their keeper enough.

“The positives were that we tried to play out and did that well and got more minutes into players who needed it.

"And we finished strongly. Victoria Williams had a great chance right at the end and I thought there was possibly offside on their first goal but we have to accept the result and move on.”
