Roberto De Zerbi shows what he can do with a ball in training.

Lewis Dunk has been impressed by Roberto De Zerbi’s footballing ability after the Italian took his first training sessions.

The former Sassuolo and Shakthar Donetsk manager was able to take to the training pitch following the granting of his work permit last week.

“We had a very good first session, it was intense,” Dunk said. “The gaffer got his points across, obviously not everyone is here because of the international break so it’s difficult to change anything.

“He joined in the rondos, he’s got a bit! It’s good to see him joining in the sessions. He’s technical, loves a flick and always wants the ball. It’s going to be an enjoyable process.”

Lewis Dunk is looking forward to working under Roberto De Zerbi.

While De Zerbi’s ability on the ball needs little work having played in Serie A, the 43-year-old will be leaning on a translator as he continues to learn English.

“Enrico, Roberto’s translator is very quick at getting the message across and we get a good picture of the manager’s personality through his body language, which is a good thing," added Dunk.

“He can speak some English and Andrea, Roberto’s assistant, can speak a little bit as well. It’s been smooth and it’s going to get easier as they learn the language in full.

Roberto De Zerbi took his first Albion training session on Monday.

“Roberto has said that playing under him is going to be a process and that it’s not often a new manager comes in when a team is doing well. So it’s about him getting his message across over time.”

Roberto took over following a good start for Albion, as they won four of their six opening games. And despite Graham Potter’s unexpected departure, Dunk says everyone is focussed on giving their all for their new boss.

“You have to be ready whatever happens, it’s football. Managers and players don’t stay at clubs forever, so we’re excited for a new challenge.

“We’re excited to learn some new ways and ideas and become a better team under Roberto. We’re open to his ways and thoughts and we can’t wait to get cracking and carry on winning games.”
