Potter: We're excited to see Trossard in action

Albion head coach Graham Potter has admitted that Leandro Trossard’s performance in the 5-1 victory against Espanyol has given him food for thought ahead of the opening Premier League match away to Manchester United on Sunday.

Trossard played at left wing-back and gave a man-of-the-match display that included a second-half hat-trick.

The Belgium international has previously appeared in that role for his national side but this was something new for the Amex crowd.

“He has got the qualities, we all know that,” Potter said. “I think he likes that role off the left. It means that he can play centrally from there, and he can obviously come on his right side and score.

“So it looks like he is enjoying his football. He finished off the season really well and we’re excited to see him start it again.”

Potter has started Leo in a more central position in the past, but agreed that a wide role does not seem to affect his goal production.

“It’s a little bit what he was thinking as well. He wanted to play central and sometimes there is a feeling for that, but actually he is really good in the wide areas.

“He gives you an option because he can play inside, he can go wide to central with his right foot. He gives you that and if he is popping in the goals, it is a bonus.”

With two attack-minded wing backs in Trossard and Solly March both starting, Potter praised the covering work done by Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.

“Yes, you have got to balance it somehow and those two read the game well,” he said. “Moises, for a young player, does that really well and makes important interceptions and tackles, and obviously the back three provide that support. So it is about finding the balance.”
