Joel Veltman played the full 90 minutes against Espanyol.

Joel Veltman is excited for the Premier League campaign to begin after the terrific 5-1 friendly win over Espanyol on Saturday.

Leandro Trossard’s hat-trick, as well as headers from Adam Webster and Lewis Dunk, secured a superb victory over the La Liga outfit.

“There are lots of positives,” Joel said. “The subs who came on were really good as well and made a positive difference. We were in the same position against Reading last weekend when we were 1-0 in front, but we made it 2-0 quickly after the break this time.

“We said at half-time we didn’t want a repeat of last week because one moment can change the game, as it did when we conceded the penalty against Reading. We kept going, we scored more goals and carried on pushing for more.

“It was a good test, Espanyol play a 4-2-3-1 like Manchester United do, although next weekend will be a big step up for us.”

The Dutchman was pleased with Albion’s approach play, with Trossard’s three goals coming from open play, while Webster and Dunk’s efforts came from set-pieces.

The defender started in a back three alongside Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster.

“Pretty much every ball was a pass forwards except for the last ten minutes. When we pass the ball between the lines we open teams up and create chances so that was pleasing.

“With Webby, Dunky and Danny [Welbeck] we have a threat from set-pieces, luckily for us they scored amazing headers. We can make set-pieces a real strength this season, we were good from them last season.”

Now the focus turns to Manchester United next Sunday.

“We’re 100 per cent ready for the new season. We showed as a team, with the subs who came on the pitch that we are. Bring it on.”
