Scherpen gets senior call-up

Goalkeeper added to Netherlands squad for Nations League games.

Kjell Scherpen made his first start for Albion in the Emirates FA Cup victory at West Brom.

Goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen has been called up by the Netherlands’ senior squad for the first time.

The 22-year-old Albion keeper was added to their squad on Monday for the forthcoming Nations League fixtures against Wales and Poland after Norwich City’s Tim Krul dropped out because of injury.

Scherpen has played 15 times for the Dutch at under-23 level.

The 22-year-old joined Albion from Ajax last summer and after recovering from a an ankle injury he made his debut in the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup in January.

Scherpen then spent the rest of the season on loan with Oostende in Belgium’s Juliper League, making seven appearances and keeping two clean sheets.

The Netherlands opened their Nations League campaign with a 4-1 win over Belgium on Saturday. They face the Welsh in Cardiff on Wednesday and Poland in Rotterdam on Saturday.
