Jason Steele has hailed Rob Sanchez’s ‘ridiculous natural ability’ after the Spain international ended the season in stunning form.

Sanchez put in a Player of the Match performance at Leeds United in our penultimate game of the season, and finished his first full year of playing in the top-flight with 11 clean sheets – a club-record in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has also been called up to Spain’s senior squad again for the upcoming Nations League matches and Steele has heaped praised on the young shot-stopper.

“Rob’s natural ability is amazing, it’s ridiculous really for a goalkeeper,” said Steele. “When you add to that his physical and mental ability, which is brilliant, you have a special player.

Jason Steele has been impressed by Rob Sanchez's performances in the Premier League.

“Over the last five or six weeks in particular I think he’s been at his peak. It’s not just down to his distribution with his feet or the saves he makes – it’s everything, he’s shown it all. He’s been at his very best recently.

“If you think this was his first full season in the Premier League as well, and the first with full crowds at games, it’s been brilliant to see.”

Sanchez’s rapid rise has meant Steele’s chances of playing first-team football have been few and far between, but the pair get on well and Steele is always willing to hand over his experience while he bides his time on the bench.

“First and foremost, I’m a footballer and I’m ready to play.” said Steele. “But if I’m not playing, I know I’m experienced and try my best to help my teammates the best I can.

“Me and Rob obviously work closely together and he’s someone I will always try to help. One thing I speak to him regularly about is simplifying his game. When he simplifies everything, it allows him to showcase his talent naturally.

“I know that when you play subconscious football - where you’re not overthinking everything and are more relaxed and confident in your ability - the better you are and the better you perform.

“I think it’s shown over this season that when Rob’s done that he’s reaped the rewards. When he plays freely and naturally, he’s fantastic.”

Jason Steele made his Premier League debut against Aston Villa in November.

While Steele is clearly happy to help Sanchez in his development, and delighted to see him doing so well, the 31-year-old still wants as much game-time as possible.

“You can ask anybody, I train the way I play and I’m ready when I’m called upon - I think I’ve proved that whenever I’ve been given the opportunity. Making my Premier League debut against Aston Villa was absolutely brilliant for myself and my family and I’ve been happy with my cup displays.

“My role in the squad hasn’t changed over the last couple of years but I will always be ready when I’m needed.”
