Cam Peupion setup Jack Spong before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Albion under-23s cruised to a 5-1 victory over Derby County at the Amex on Monday as they moved seven points clear of the bottom three in Premier League 2.

Goals from Todd Miller, Jack Spong and Cam Peupion before the break put Albion in control, with Spong adding to Albion's tally for the evening from the penalty spot 15 minutes after the restart before Miller got his second late on.

Antef Tsoungui returned after five months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

While Albion named six players in the starting XI who have made a first-team appearance this season, the oldest player on the park in an Albion shirt was captain Marc Leonard, who turned 20 in December – a positive reflection of the pathway the hosts have in place for their young starlets.

Included in that group was defender Antef Tsoungui, who was making his return after a five-month absence with an ankle injury.

Miller had seen a low drive saved early on by Harry Evans but the Albion winger made the breakthrough with 19 minutes gone. Andrew Moran expertly rode a tackle from Courtney Clarke before slipping the ball through for Miller who poked it past Evans.

The Australian slotted home Albion's third just before the break.

Despite being bottom of Premier League 2, the Rams showed resolve after going behind and deservedly had an equaliser after half an hour when Jack Stretton pounced on a defensive mix-up, thumping home from 16 yards.

Albion’s response nine minutes later ensured any Derby joy was brief. Peupion cut in from the right, picked out Spong who worked a yard of space for himself on the edge of the box and found the top left corner in some fashion.

Andrew Crofts’ half-time team talk would have no doubt been made easier by Peupion adding a third just before the break. The Australian ran through on goal and showed real composure to curl into the bottom left corner.

Jack Spong found the top left corner in emphatic fashion to put Albion 2-1 up.

Any doubt about the three points going to the home team was put to bed on the hour, after Albion were awarded a penalty for a handball.

Spong was on spot-kick duties and dispatched calmly from 12 yards, finding the bottom right corner.

Not to be outdone, Miller grabbed his second of the night in style, thumping the ball into the bottom left corner from 18-yards in the dying embers.

Albion moved up to eighth with the win and most importantly, put daylight between themselves and the relegation spots.

Line-up: Beadle, Offiah, Furlong, Turns, Roberts, Tsoungui (Baker-Boaitey 67), Peupion, Leonard (C), Moran (Ella 85), Spong, Miller.

Unused subs: Talley, Hinchy, Chouchane.
