Andrew Crofts knows that his under-21s will have to get a positive result in tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy match if they are to get out of the group stages.
Albion need at least two points as they face League Two table-toppers Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn.
“The squad understands what they’re coming up against in Forest Green,” Crofts said. “They’re flying at the top of their league. We know there is something on it if we want to get out of the group.
“There will be opposition using this as a chance to be a regular in the first team, but that’s good for us as it gives us a gauge as to where we are as a team and as individuals.

“Players at under-21 level need to test themselves against experienced professionals. It’ll be really competitive and that can only make it better for us, with the game played at an intensity that will match an EFL game.”
Albion will be short of a few regulars, who are away on international duty.
“Every game brings another opportunity for someone to impress. An opportunity to express themselves, hopefully they enjoy it and more importantly learn from the evening.”
Crofts will be without the suspended Gary Dicker, who was shown a straight red card in Albion’s 1-0 defeat to Walsall and says his players will have to adapt to a different style of play than they experience in Premier League 2.
"They will be up against guys who will have a little more nous, with a different style. Forest Green can mix it up, they can play it short or direct with two strikers.
“That has obviously worked really well for Forest Green in the league. [Manager] Rob Edwards is doing a great job there, hopefully there’s a decent crowd there to add that edge.”
