Potter: Switching to my own clothes was the trick!

Albion's results in 2021 coincided with head coach's change of attire.

Graham Potter's switch to wearing his own clothes for matches has coincided with an upturn in form.

Changing from a club tracksuit to his own clothes may well have been the turning point in Albion's season, Graham Potter joked.

That, alongside having two goalkeepers on the bench and other slight changes, may have contributed as Albion's upturn in form since the New Year played a big part in securing their Premier League status.

“Well this year we might have cracked the formula,” Potter said with a smile. “Two goalkeepers on the bench, wear your own clothes for the games, go to hotels before home games, put water on the pitch. All these things, this is how we improve, it's not about the coaching or the development of the players!

PL Highlights: Albion 3 Man City 2

“We had injuries so had to have two goalkeepers on the bench against Manchester City, it was the same against Liverpool. The two times we've had two goalkeepers on the bench we've beaten Liverpool and Manchester City, so we're going to do it every week!

"Christian [Walton] has been supporting the goalkeepers and deserves to be there. It wasn't a decision to have a second goalkeeper and leave out an outfield player, we had problems with injuries and couldn't use anyone else."

The true mark of improvement from last season will be if Albion can exceed their record points tally (41), which they will do should they avoid defeat at the Emirates against Arsenal today.

Despite that, Potter isn’t sure which of his two campaigns as Albion boss he has enjoyed more.

"It's really difficult to choose, because I got a lot of satisfaction from both in different ways. I remember coming back from my time in Ostersund and thinking if I ever did anything that I'd look back on as proud as I am of that moment, I'd think I'd have done well. And when I look back at these last two years I put it in comparison to what we achieved at Ostersund.

Potter's Arsenal press conference

"There have been a lot of challenges but I'm really happy with how the team has progressed.

“Young players have come into the team, which will strategically help us going forward in terms of recruitment and developing the team, so when I look back it's been a very challenging time but a feeling of pride in what we've achieved.

"It's hard to go too far over the top, because we're on 41 points and I understand that's the world we're in, but to go from 36 points in the Premier League, to change style, introduce young players, to then still maintain a points level that keeps you in the Premier League and then to carry on improving I think has been really good.”
