Brighton & Hove Albion are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Frank Worthington, aged 72, after a long illness.

A mercurial talent whose professional career spanned over 20 years, he joined the Seagulls in May 1984 on a free transfer – having been signed by Chris Cattlin, a former team-mate at Frank’s first club, Huddersfield Town.

At the age of 35, he entertained the Goldstone crowd for just one season, but still showed the flamboyance that he displayed in his heyday for the likes of Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City.

He was a regular for the Albion in Division Two, scoring eight goals from his 35 appearances, and while he was offered another one-year contract at the end of the campaign, he opted to join Tranmere Rovers as player-manager.

In total, Frank’s sparkling career spanned 11 Football League clubs, and he scored 236 goals in 757 games. He played just eight times for England, scoring twice, but he will always be remembered as one of the most gifted talents of his generation.

We send on our condolences to Frank’s family and friends at this sad time.
