Zak Emmerson celebrates his stunning late winner against Chelsea.

Albion continued their fine run of form in Under-18 Premier League South with a pulsating 3-2 victory away to Chelsea on Wednesday.

Marcus Ifill's brace and a stunning late winner from Zak Emmerson took third-placed Albion onto 30 points and made it four wins on the spin for Mark Beard's team.

Chelsea took the lead after two minutes when Charlie Wiggett headed home a corner from the right.

Albion grew into the game and a quickly taken corner routine on the left ended in Andrew Moran firing over, before the midfielder was denied by a last-gasp challenge after starting and ending a good counter-attack.

Marcus Ifill got the away side back on level terms after 23 minutes with a composed finish after a great weighted pass into his path by Moran who then produced a superb solo run, stylishly nutmegging two Chelsea defenders before seeing his chip bounce back off the crossbar.

Marcus Ifill followed his brace up at the weekend with another this afternoon.

Albion had a good chance to go ahead soon after the restart when Ifill drove forward and looked to find Emmerson, but his pass was too strong for the striker who was looking to run behind the home defence.

Charlie Webster showed good footwork to work himself some space and saw a long-range effort come off the bar for the hosts while Emmerson couldn't direct Zak Sturge's cross towards goal.

Toby Bull then had to get across well to keep out a fierce effort from Dion Rankine, but the hosts regained the lead with their next attack. A free kick from the right wasn’t cleared and Brodi Hughes finished from inside the area just before the hour mark.

Jaami Qureshi and Jack Hinshelwood replaced Samy Chouchane and Matt Everitt as Albion continued to search for another equaliser in the final 25 minutes.

Moran dragged a shot wide at the near post before Ifill was inches away from getting on the end of Moran’s cross from the left.

But Ifill wasn't to be denied his and Albion's second as he kept his cool to net another equaliser on 77 minutes.

The forward latched onto a ball over the top by Hinshelwood and poked it over goalkeeper Prince Adegoke and slotted it into the bottom corner.

Albion didn't let up and got their reward five minutes from time.

Emmerson latched onto a pass from Qureshi and curled a fantastic effort into the top corner and out of the reach Adegoke to cap a fine performance.

Mark Beard will be demanding more of his under-18s this season.

Coach Mark Beard said, “I'm really pleased. To be 1-0 and 2-1 down against one of the strongest Academy teams in the country and to show the character we did to come back, and score some fantastic goals, was really satisfying.

“I thought we were outstanding in the first half, when we had a lot of chances. Not many teams come here and dominate as we did but in the second half Chelsea pressed higher and got in front. But we brought Jack Hinshelwood on, who is one of our under-16s, and it changed things for us. The ball he played for the equaliser was superb and then Zak Emmerson got an outstanding winner.

“I thought it was a fully deserved win. Chelsea had a lot of chances too and threw the kitchen sink at us, but we defended so well.”

Albion face Leicester City away from home next Saturday 13th March.
