U23 Preview: Albion Make Rovers Return

By Kieran Cleeves • 11 March 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-23s take on Blackburn Rovers at the Leyland County Ground this evening, kick-off 7pm, and Simon Rusk’s team will be keen to maintain the pressure on league leaders Everton.

The Seagulls find themselves four points behind the Toffees with just four games remaining, and Rusk’s side meet the Merseyside club in their penultimate game of the Premier League 2 Division 1 season.

Albion have taken 14 points from a possible 18 to leave themselves hot on the heels of Everton, and another three points against Rovers will apply further pressure on the Toffees tonight, who play host to Arsenal.

Rovers visited the Amex Stadium back in October and took the lead after just three minutes, but Aaron Connolly drew the Seagulls level before Ben Barclay headed the winning goal in the 89th minute.

The Lancashire club find themselves just five points above the relegation zone, but Rovers secured an important 3-1 victory over West Ham United last time out to pull themselves clear of the Hammers.

Albion’s visit to the Leyland County Ground last season was a successful one — goals from Viktor Gyokeres and James Tilley sealed a 2-0 win, but Rovers managed to finish in top spot to win promotion to the PL2 alongside the Seagulls.
