Brighton & Hove Albion central defender Shane Duffy looks back at his joy at finding the target last season and his partnership with Lewis Dunk across the 2018/19 campaign.
You scored four goals last season, you must be pleased with that...
I’m happy that I’m contributing in terms of goals and I feel I can get a lot more as well.
The first season in the Premier League was disappointing for me, not to have scored at all, but I set a goal at the end of the 2017/18 season that if I played as many games, I wanted to score more and that’s been the case.
You got your first of the season against Manchester United. A high point for you?
I’d say so. I’d waited a long time for that goal, and the fact it was against Man United made it special as well. As a kid I was a Man United supporter when it came to English teams - my mum got me the kit and a lot of my mates support them as well.
We got the win that day so it was a great day for the club and the perfect way to respond after losing the first game of the season against Watford.
I should have scored from the first corner, but managed to get a second chance, swung with my left foot and fortunately it went in!
What about your overall form last season and your partnership with Lewis Dunk?
Form-wise I feel that I can always get better; you always go through little dips where you have a few bad games, or don’t quite reach the standards you’ve set, but I’ve been playing okay overall and hopefully that will continue into next season.
Playing alongside Dunky is just so natural now as we’ve been partners on the pitch for a lot of games, but credit also has to go down to the full-backs, the keeper and everyone in the team, who do a lot to help protect us.
As a partnership we’re always trying to improve; we’re two years older now, we’re more experienced and with more games against the top players, which helps.
I always enjoy testing myself against the top players and if you can get a result against them it makes it more special.
