Jahanbakhsh Makes Return From Injury

By Kieran Cleeves • 17 January 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh made his return from injury for Iran in yesterday’s 0-0 draw against Iraq in the Asian Cup.

The 25-year-old played the opening 63 minutes at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, as Iran secured top spot in Group D to progress to the knockout stages of the quadrennial tournament.

Jahanbakhsh last played for the Seagulls in their 3-1 defeat to Everton back in November, where the Iranian picked up a hamstring injury, ruling him out of action until leaving for the Asian Cup.

His nation are yet to concede a goal in the tournament, as they beat Yemen 5-0 and Vietnam 2-0 before their goalless draw against Iraq — and Jahanbakhsh’s side now wait to find out their last-16 opponents, who they’ll play on Sunday 20th January.

Elsewhere, Maty Ryan also reached the knockout stages with Australia, and the goalkeeper will come up against either Uzbekistan or Japan on Monday 21st January, after the Socceroos finished second in their group.
