U18 Preview: Albion Targeting A Place In The Quarter-finals

By James Hilsum • 12 February 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s continue their FA Youth Cup campaign tonight as they face Everton in a fifth round tie at Goodison Park, and the game will be streamed live on YouTube from 6.45pm ahead of a 7pm kick-off.

It is the third match in the competition for Mark Beard’s and Mikey Harris’s side in what has been a memorable run to the fifth round, after wins over West Ham United and Manchester United.

A victory would see Albion progress to the sixth round for only the second time in the club’s history after losing on penalties to Newcastle United at that stage of the competition in 2006.

Albion overcame West Ham 5-4 on penalties in a dramatic match at the Chigwell Construction Stadium in round three, which saw Danny Cashman cancel out Amadou Diallo’s opener to take the game into extra time.

Peter Gwargis, Cashman, Marc Leonard, Haydon Roberts and Teddy Jenks were all successful from the spot, as Albion secured a 5-4 victory on penalties.

The Seagulls then faced Manchester United in the fourth round and recorded an impressive 3-1 win at Leigh Sports Village.

Gwargis gave Albion the lead from the penalty spot, before Ryan Longman doubled Albion’s lead with a stunning strike to put the Seagulls 2-0 up with just 14 minutes played.

Roberts added a third with a close-range header ten minutes after the re-start, before Di’shon Bernard netted a consolation in stoppage time.

The Toffees advanced to this stage of the competition after beating Sunderland 4-1 in round three, before beating Stoke City 3-1 on penalties with the scores level at 2-2 after extra time.

The winners of tonight’s game will travel to West Bromwich Albion in the sixth round, and the tie must be played by Saturday 2nd March.

As well as being streamed live, fans can also follow a live text blog on the Match Centre this evening, with a match report, and gallery to be uploaded after the full-time whistle.

Entry to tonight’s game at Goodison Park is priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
