Brighton & Hove Albion defender Gaetan Bong believes the team showed a response from Tuesday’s frustrating defeat at Fulham, despite being held to a draw by Watford on Saturday.

Albion put in a dominant display against the Hornets, and Bong took the positives from a solid display at the Amex.

He said, “We spoke before the game about reacting to what happened at Fulham, because we played very well in the first half and in the second half we had some silly mistakes.

“We had to react and we did. We played well, were in control and had chances. We were unlucky because we didn’t score, but we showed a reaction.

“We had the fans behind us, we were all pushing together and everyone can see we wanted to score and win.

“We were unlucky, but we kept a clean sheet and didn’t concede a goal.”

The Cameroonian played behind Jurgen Locadia on the left wing, and explained how he is developing a good understanding with the Dutchman.

“I enjoy playing with him, and he’s been playing well in the last couple of games. He’s playing well, is working hard and he gives me options to run forward.

“This is important for me, because everyone knows I can defend well, but I like to go forward when I can.

“Most of the time I try to do the job the manager asks me to do. Sometimes the fans are looking for me to go forward more, but I have to respect what the manager and team needs from me.”

The focus now turns to the Emirates FA Cup fourth round replay against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday, and Bong highlighted the importance of progressing to the next round.

“Everyone knows that a cup game is different, but we want to win and qualify for the next round. It gives a chance for some other players to play too.

“I played in the first game against Bournemouth and I wanted to win the game because it was important for us. This is another game and we’ll see what happens on Wednesday.”
