Ryan: We Need To Learn From Mistakes

By James Hilsum • 12 September 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mathew Ryan has encouraged his team-mates to learn from their mistakes heading into next Monday’s match away at Southampton.

Ryan explained how points are easily dropped on the road due to lapses in concentration, and is eager to avoid the same scenario at St Mary’s.

He said, “We go into every game looking to get something and it’s not going to be any different in that respect next Monday.

“We took a lot of positives from our performance against Liverpool, but it was a similar performance to United away last year, and we got nothing from either game.

“It’s those little moments in games where we can be good for 90 minutes, but if you switch off once then you might not get anything from it.”

The Australian shot-stopper reiterated Albion’s belief that they can compete at this level and explained how much he is learning from playing consistently.

“We need to maintain a high level throughout every game. I just take one game at a time and whoever we’re playing next is who I’m focusing on.

“It’s Southampton now and we showed from our experiences last season that if we play to our levels, we’ve got a chance in any game.

“I’m learning from having regular game time at the highest level. In Spain it’s probably at a similar level to here, but I didn’t play as much as I would’ve hoped.

“Coming here and playing every game last season has better equipped me for any future matches that come up.

“I’m trying to learn as I go. I’m learning both tactically and physically about what it takes to be a goalkeeper for Brighton.”
