U23 Preview: Albion V West Ham United

By Kieran Cleeves • 14 September 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-23s return to Premier League 2 Division 1 action against West Ham United at the Amex Stadium this evening, kick-off 7pm.

The Seagulls are four matches unbeaten in the league, but tasted defeat in the Checkatrade Trophy last time out, as Luton Town claimed a narrow 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road.

Simon Rusk’s team have made an eye-catching start to the season, which included their emphatic 5-0 win against Manchester City at the Broadfield Stadium a fortnight ago.

Albion had drawn a hat-trick of games prior to City’s visit, as Rusk’s team picked up points in games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur - two of which came away from home.

City visited the Broadfield Stadium sitting top of the league, but the Seagulls outclassed their opponents on the night, as goals from Viktor Gyokeres, Haydon Roberts, Aaron Connolly (2) and James Tilley sealed victory.

Tonight’s opponents opened the campaign with a 3-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on the road, but followed that up with successive home defeats to Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Hammers conceded nine goals in their back-to-back losses but bounced back with an impressive 2-1 away victory against Liverpool at their training ground.

Rusk’s side met the Hammers four times during the 2016/17 season, in both the Premier League 2 Division 2 and Premier League Cup, and Albion claimed three victories and one draw.

The Seagulls twice beat their east London opponents 3-0 on the south coast, while a 3-1 victory and a goalless draw came from their two meetings in the capital.
