Albion Women Get Off The Mark In October

By James Hilsum • 31 October 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion gained their first points of the FA Women’s Super League season during October and ended the month four points clear of the bottom of the table.

The month began with a dramatic 3-3 draw away at Everton on 14th October, as Albion recovered from 3-1 down to claim their first point of the season at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

Danielle Buet gave the Seagulls the lead with a stunning strike from distance to score the club’s first league goal of the campaign, before goals from Inessa Kaagman, Gabby George and Chloe Kelly turned the match on its head.

But two goals in the space of four minutes from Ellie Brazil completed a memorable comeback, ahead of a match against Manchester City at the Broadfield Stadium a week later.

City proved to be too strong for Albion, as Georgia Stanway’s hat-trick and a goal each from Caroline Weir, Nikita Parris and Claire Emslie secured a 6-0 victory in West Sussex.

Albion still created a number of chances throughout the 90 minutes despite the heavy defeat, as Steph Houghton cleared Ini Umotong’s strike off the line in one of the best chances of the game.

The month ended on a high though, as Hope Powell’s side claimed a crucial 2-1 win over bottom club Yeovil Town on Sunday to move four points clear of the sole relegation place in the FA Women’s Super League.

First-half goals from Jodie Brett and Victoria Williams ultimately proved to be difference, but Ellie Mason ensured a nervy end to the game when she fired home on the rebound after seeing her initial penalty saved by Marie Hourihan.

Albion now have just under three weeks to wait until their next match, when Reading visit the Broadfield Stadium on 18th November.
